I AM SMILING

Some chubby girls are looking at me
and then I realise I am smiling
I am smiling in bus number 109 on the way to work
of course a good impression is impossible to make by a long-haired young man staring through the window and smiling.
but I remembered you and, as usual, I smiled.
it is an uncontrolled reaction.
I woke up in the morning knotted in bad dreams, with skinnings alive,
with knitting needles twisting my teeth
and I remembered the grammar classes.
on the bus it stinks of singlets and of petrol
and through the window what do you think? apartment blocks and more apartment blocks.
I smiled and I was left, I believe, for some minutes with this smile on my face.
I remembered you, still in that large yellow t-shirt
and me also in a t-shirt, somewhat filthy, as we entered into the bulandra*
in the foyer there were some stuck-up chicks and some guys in suits…
we looked as if we’d landed from Woodstock,
at school, the principal started to scold me, and the secretary
threatened me
the ornamental plant unwatered on time, only had about a quarter of its foliage left
trying to regain control of the classroom
I felt the smile returning so irresistibly,
that I had to turn my face towards the blackboard.
